Our Foundation

A Commitment to Inclusive and Accessible Wellness

From the very beginning, the journey of what is now Wellness Homes of Chicago has been guided by a profound commitment: to ensure truly accessible and equitable wellness services for our diverse community. Our initial vision was clear: to actively dismantle health disparities and cultivate a welcoming, respectful environment, free of barriers, where individuals of every race, sexual preference, color, or creed could flourish in mind, body, and soul. This wasn't just an aspiration; it was the bedrock upon which our story would be built.

2014

The Genesis of Breakthrough - Baal Perazim Wellness

Our organization's story began in 2014, sparked by a powerful vision embodied in our first name: Baal Perazim Wellness. This name, meaning "place of breakthroughs," was purposefully chosen by our founder, Dr. Maurice Brownlee. His personal and professional experiences had brought him face-to-face with the stark realities of health inequalities. Witnessing the devastating impact of the HIV crisis, particularly among young men of color in Atlanta, GA, ignited within him an unwavering passion to forge a solution. He saw young lives tragically cut short, fueling a deep commitment to transformative change. This urgency led to two pivotal actions: the establishment of the Baal Perazim Youth Foundation and Dr. Brownlee's enrollment in Duke University's specialized HIV/AIDS program, equipping him with the expertise to combat the epidemic. The name "Baal Perazim" wasn't just a label; it was the very essence of Dr. Brownlee's founding vision – a commitment to creating an environment, the nascent Wellness Home model, that would be a "place of wellness breakthrough," where barriers to health could be overcome, holistic well-being realized, and transformative healing empowered.

2018

A Calling to Chicago - The Men of Color Wellness Project

Dr. Brownlee's journey took a decisive turn in 2018. Through deep engagement with the Chicago community and the insights of an advisory committee, he identified a critical gap: the lack of sustainable wellness, equity, and empowerment programs specifically tailored for men of color. Answering this clear calling, Dr. Brownlee chose to establish roots in Chicago, dedicating his energy to nurturing the seeds of change. The framework for the transformative Men of Color Wellness Project was meticulously crafted – a blueprint designed to bridge divides and cultivate genuine well-being within this vital community.

November 2018

Opening Our Doors: Baal Perazim Wellness, Inc.

November 2018 marked a courageous step forward. With unwavering conviction and fueled by personal savings, Dr. Brownlee established Baal Perazim Wellness, Inc. in Chicago. The name, "place of breakthrough," became a tangible reality as the doors opened to a space dedicated to shattering barriers and creating a sanctuary for profound wellness transformation. This act of self-funded dedication underscored the depth of his belief in the power of community-centered, low-barrier care.

2020

Expanding Our Reach - The NorthStar Health Acquisition

Our journey gained significant momentum in 2020 with the acquisition of NorthStar Health, a pivotal step guided by Dr. Brownlee’s mentor, Dr. Daniel Berger. This expansion wasn't merely about organizational growth; it was about amplifying our capacity to provide comprehensive, low-barrier care, extending our reach to more individuals, and further solidifying our commitment to their holistic well-being, nurturing the mind, body, and soul.

2022

Embracing Our Identity - Becoming Wellness Homes of Chicago

In 2022, we embraced a new chapter, evolving into Wellness Homes of Chicago. This name wasn't just a change; it was a powerful reflection of our expanding vision and the comprehensive, integrated services we offered to all members of our diverse community. It embodied our commitment to being more than a clinic – a true "home" where everyone could find welcome, unwavering support, and integrated services meticulously designed for their unique wellness journey. It signified our dedication to creating a space where feeling truly seen, heard, and cared for forms the very foundation of healing and growth.

2023

Nurturing the Whole Person - Wellness Home Behavioral Health

Recognizing the vital and inseparable connection between mental and physical health, Dr. Brownlee established Wellness Home Behavioral Health in 2023. This crucial addition wasn't simply about filling a gap in services; it was a profound acknowledgment of the interconnectedness of our being. Achieving certification as a mental health center in the same year underscored our unwavering commitment to meeting the highest standards of integrated care, ensuring that the mind is nurtured with the same dedication as the body.
